LVP is a four-layer product. Luxury Vinyl Flooring typically consists of four layers:

• First, the base, or backing, is what most of the flooring is made up of.
• Second, the design layer gives the plank its texture and color.
• Third, an upper layer protects the design underneath it.
• Finally, the very outermost layer helps resists scratching and other wear and tear.

Like wood flooring, LVP thickness varies. Luxury Vinyl Plank comes in various thicknesses and is measured in mils, meaning 1/1000th of an inch. Generally speaking, most homeowners are satisfied with 12-20 mils, and commercial owners tend to do better with 20-40 mils due to the increased foot traffic.
